Hosea 4:6

“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.”

One of the greatest keys to raising a godly family is applied knowledge. Jesus referred to “the key of knowledge” in Luke 11:52. A key gives access, and knowledge gives us access to understanding that can transform how we live.

Hosea 4:6 says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” Good intentions alone are not enough to build strong families. People can sincerely love each other and still experience unnecessary difficulties because they lack understanding about how to relate, communicate, forgive and discharge their responsibilities.

The Bible also declares, “Through knowledge shall the just be delivered” (Proverbs 11:9). Knowledge can deliver us from patterns of conduct that damage relationships. When biblical truth exposes a wrong attitude or habit, we should have the humility to change.

But knowledge only becomes powerful when it is applied. Jesus said that the person who hears His sayings and does them is like someone who built a house upon a rock (Matthew 7:24–25). Knowing what to do without practising it cannot produce the desired transformation.

This principle is particularly important in marriage. Husbands are specifically instructed to live with their wives “according to knowledge” and to show them honour (1 Peter 3:7). Relationships cannot be successfully managed merely according to moods, assumptions and emotions. They require understanding.

Become a student of God's principles for family life. Read the Bible, learn, listen, reflect and apply what you learn. Knowledge informs you, but applied knowledge transforms you. Build your family upon the wisdom of God's Word (Proverbs 24:3–4).

1 Timothy 4:8

“Godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.”

One of the greatest qualities you can bring into your family is godliness. Money is useful, education is valuable and achievements are desirable, but none of these can replace godly character. The Bible declares that godliness is profitable for all things (1 Timothy 4:8).

Godliness means living with reverence for God and allowing that reverence to influence your conduct. It is Christianity demonstrated in everyday behaviour. Paul instructed Titus that God's grace teaches us to deny ungodliness and live “soberly, righteously, and godly” (Titus 2:11–12).

The Bible tells believers to deliberately add godliness to their faith (2 Peter 1:5–7). It is therefore not enough merely to say that you believe in God. Your faith should increasingly shape your character, attitudes and relationships. James reminds us that faith should produce corresponding action (James 2:17–18).

Godliness is especially important in the family because your family sees the version of you that the public may never see. It is possible to appear spiritual before other people while behaving very differently at home. Genuine godliness must survive beyond the church building.

A godly father and a godly mother provide their children with examples worthy of imitation. Paul reminded Timothy of the sincere faith that had first lived in his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice (2 Timothy 1:5). Timothy's spiritual heritage had a strong family connection.

Do not seek only to give your family material possessions; give them the example of a life that honours God. One of the greatest inheritances we can leave the next generation is the legacy of genuine faith and godly character (Proverbs 20:7).
